I
love surprises! Especially when it’s as big as this!
I
have been an online ESL teacher for almost 2 years now through the online e-learning
portal: cafetalk.com
Among
all of the ESL tutorial online platforms, cafetalk.com is actually my favorite
because primarily, they pay more. Secondly, the people behind this amazing
website are very accommodating and helpful. Lastly, I just looooovvveeee how
their official website was made!
When
I first joined cafetalk.com, I tried to ask for help from cafetalk admin and
somebody by the name of Ken responded to me promptly. He helped me set-up my
account, uploaded my introductory video and even converted my audio clip to MP3
format! Everything was a breeze because of the immediate help that I got from their
IT/admin team.
After
that, I got my first lesson request which surprisingly, came from Ken! And subsequently
after that first lesson, I received regular lesson requests from him. He is a
very dedicated student, and I was very impressed because he takes down notes
and he was not too proud to admit when an English word was new to him. He even
asks what the meaning of the word is and tries to use it in a sentence. One thing I like about Japanese students is
that they are generally professional and very polite.
As
my cafetalk portfolio continues to grow, I realized I should try to interact
with my dear students in some other ways, because they cannot take up my lesson
every day.
So
I decided to set-up my personal Facebook page (www.facebook.com/EslOnline35) so
I can give out practical tips, and share with them the kind of life in Singapore
through my photos and trivia!
After
announcing my FB page to all of my students, guess what? It was Ken who first
liked my FB page. It was expected as he has always been one of my loyal
students. He is indeed one of my favorite students too not only because he
regularly takes my lesson, but also because he was the one who first helped me
when I was just kickstarting my cafetalk tutor account.
One
fine day when I was checking his FB profile, I got the biggest shock of my life…
I
saw that his current position was: CEO/President of Small-Bridge, Inc. The great news is: Cafetalk.com is a
subsidiary of Small-Bridge, Inc!
I
asked myself: “How can I not know that my top student was the owner of
Cafetalk.com all this time???”. Was it because he was so humble that I didn’t
even had a clue that the reason why he always go to work even on weekends,
online via skype even its past 8pm, frequently travels overseas, is because he
owns the company!!! Who else would show such passion and care for the business
and the service that it offers other than the founder? Or maybe I was just that
blur that I didn’t notice at all!
On
the other hand, I felt amazed and grateful at the same time. It was just an
overflow of mixed emotions. I was taken aback by the thought of how humble he
is… to not let me know I was tutoring to a successful businessman and probably
a multi-millionaire. I remember the multiple times I tried to ask him what’s
his exact position in cafetalk and how he tried to divert the conversation and
just plainly tells me he is the administrator. I even told him I salute him for
being such a hard-working employee because he still goes to work on weekends.
I
honestly don’t know his real reasons why he decided to hide it from me, or
maybe he really does not tell all his tutors that he is the president of
cafetalk. But thanks Ken for the trust. It’s a great pleasure to be your
English tutor and more power to cafetalk.com!
